Drawing from Darwinism was a daring move for An Ode To No One’s Autumn Winter 2011 collection. The risk paid off, with a well-rounded and wearable collection that sees a subtle contemplation of evolution through a running motif of 3D digital prints.
Designer Adi Setiadi is one of the first in fashion to experiment with 3D prints in her AW11 offering, ‘Evidence of Evolution’. These prints - microscopic views of delicate insect wing hybrids - are visually compelling to the naked eye and exceptional through 3D glasses. Combined with precision cut-outs, the garments border on the futuristic, technically and aesthetically.
In what is a pleasant contrast to the bold 3D prints, a series of pale pink dresses add a softer edge to the label’s exploration of evolution. Lavender hues inject further femininity into the collection and the considered use of drapery is testament to Setiadi’s skill as a seamstress.
Reflecting Charles Darwin’s theory that the species to ultimately survive is the one most adaptable to change, it is certain that An Ode To No One will sustain itself as a label if it is to remain on the forefront of new technology and innovative design.
