Keeping up with the Johnston

Get Kirrily With It

By Kat George, 14 March 2011

So how do you make the transition from Melbourne to Sydney and successfully fuse the style of Australia’s two premier style cities? Ask Kirrily Johnston. The talented designer made the move from Melbourne to Sydney, and it shows her in her eponymous label. Taking the best elements of both worlds and combining them to create something that- in terms of city-centric fashion styles- is both interesting and dynamic in its influences.

From Melbourne, Johnston borrows a dark romanticism, sweeping layers and brooding enigma. From Sydney, she infuses beachside sex appeal and sidewalk glamour. With a distinctly ethnic charisma, Kirrily Johnston’s seasonal goddess always seems to have stepped out of some natural phenomena- the desert, the ocean or the trees. This season, she’s a forest dweller, as mysterious as she is inviting.

For AW11 key pieces from the collection include draped one shoulder dresses- I’m especially loving the printed style. There is a must have leather dress in the collection, as well as some super sexy high waist military style trousers. Kirrily Johnston is also dabbling in accessories now, with cuffs, rings and necklaces in raw, hammered shapes as well as some combat style wedges that- ahem- you can’t afford not to have in your wardrobe this winter.
