Tucked away, in true Melbourne style, atop Level 4 of Carlow House on Flinders Lane, lies new kid on the block Lord Coconut. Quite possibly the only Melbourne store catering exclusively to the male jewellery market, Lord Coconut doesn’t disappoint with its broad, whimsical and innovative range of handcrafted, contemporary collections. The collections housed are all sourced from local artisans and fledgling designers. Many are stocked exclusively by Lord Coconut and owner Mark Boldiston has even convinced some local jewellers to create new lines just for men.
So what’s on offer? Looking for some achingly hip cufflinks (think mock fob watches, tanned fish skins and sterling silver designs), neckties and rings in materials ranging from titanium and gold to copper and iron? Come on down. Or, for the fashion forward, try Lord Coconut’s range of ‘mooches’ (male brooches including coloured beetles made from single sheets of metal) as well as bracelets and taxidermy items such as preserved crocodile paws. There are also unique objets d’art for your smoking room or club lounge such as West African masks, Indian carvings and framed illustrations. The stalactites on offer make impressive paper weights. If this isn’t enough, there are many other small intriguing items to peruse or to help kick a collection off.
Evoking the feel of London’s Natural History Museum with impressive displays and interesting, offbeat decorations, Lord Coconut is a new and promising space for men to explore their inner peacock or to admire the increasingly rare works of local artisans and designers.
