Purveyors of ‘cool’, the Fat4 have become symbolic of Melbourne’s coffee-swilling, leather-bound-journal-clutching, skinny-jean-wearing, iphone-tapping, young creative population. Doused in black, wrapped up in layers and set alight with a hint of the avant garde, the Fat aesthetic is as easily accessible as it is fashionable, as pieces are carefully selected to appeal to all with their easy versatility and Melbourne-centric practicality. Part nerd, part rock star, part night crawler, part artist, part girl/boy next door, Fat has something for every one, and it’s often a challenge just to leave one of the four Fat locations empty handed.
Born in 1998 on Melbourne’s iconic Johnston St in Fitzroy, The Fat flagship store moved just a few blocks away to Brunswick St in 2005 after welcoming three siblings into the world at Chadstone, Chapel St and Melbourne’s GPO. Collectively the four stores house an impressive repertoire of designers, from the local- Alpha60, Claude Maus, Bassike, Dress Up Chronicles of Never, Pam, Julia DeVille, Reiss Radvanyi, Carly Hunter and Maise (to name but a few)- to the international- including Anglomania, Comme Des Garcons, Melissa and Cheap Monday- and the inbetween- New Zeland labels Lover and Stolen Girlfriends Club. Fat4 also stocks a quirky range of home wears and lifestyle products from Lomo cameras to cute porcelain bunny rabbits to adorn bookshelves and fireplaces in your house.
