SS11/12 - Natural Law

I Love A Sunburnt Country

By Ingrid Kesa, 10 October 2011

Sara Phillips’ SS11/12 collection, 'Natural Law', is a unique take on Australiana - minus the kitsch connotations.

Set apart from other designers for her considered use of prints, this time Sara uses archival images of Australian floral and fauna from the 1930’s as a source. The resultant native florals sprawl across garments and intermingle with bold snakeskin and crocodile to create an eclectic but ultimately wearable offering.

The colour palette also mimics the natural Australian landscape, particularly that of the outback. Neutrals sit alongside deep red and burnt orange with pinks, blues and gumtree green all thrown in. Silk is Sara Phillips’ key fabrication this season with sweet sheer pieces marking a highlight of the implementation of this material.

Other strong pieces include the series of digital print dresses. The floral prints have been manipulated as mirror images, with almost Oriental undertones, picking up on a current international trend. The printing of these pieces is excellently executed, using over sixteen colours in the process. The snakeskin trench coat is easily worn with any of the Natural Law items, or those already found in your wardrobe.

Natural Law will drop in stores soon, just in time for summer.
