Jenni Thorman is studying Fashion Design at RMIT Brunswick. She’s had a passion for fashion since she was a little one, and started her thrifting days at St Vinnies in the the dolls dresses section. Now she’s moved onto mens ties and is making some amazing headwear with her finds. With Melbourne Cup just around the corner, we chatted with Jenni about her creations.
Tell us about your first Melbourne Cup experience.
When I was in 5th class my favourite teacher organised a class sweep. It was 5 cents to enter and I won first prize! As the winner, I received $1.20! In those days it meant I could afford a Sunnyboy, at the school canteen, every day for a week!
Why do you think we're so in love with headpieces?
Apart from being handmade with love, very beautiful and eco-unique, they are also almost unrecognisable as the second hand neck ties they once were.
How do you go about making your beauties?
I am always scouring second hand and vintage markets and shops looking for the trinkets and colourful or interesting neckties. I look for feathers, beads and colour but just recently I've begun making birds nests from organic matter. They're a little crazy and a lot of work but I love them all the same. Once assembled, they're attached to either a headband or a comb, photographed and ready to be admired!
What values influence your art practice?
For my headpieces and anything else I design, always to be ethical when and where I can. It gives individualism like no other. I feel that being ethical isn't a choice separate from style and design, and that consumers also recognise and see value in this.
Do you make custom pieces for individuals?
Oh yes definitely. I love being loved for my making my pieces and if I can make them for someone to their specifications, it just means they will love them even more.
You can find Jen’s beautiful pieces at the RMIT Co-Op Community stall at Rose St Markets, Fitzroy this Sunday, 30th of October. Jen also has an online store at: www.mybestfriendjen.com and visit her on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/mybestfriendjen
