On a recent trip to Melbourne I was bemused by good friend and super-talented jewellery designer Andy Henson’s commitment to his new project. Working at all hours of day and night on his brainchild with some other very wonderful young Melbourne folk I couldn’t quite grasp why he wouldn’t just close his MacBook and join me for some kind of frivolous jaunt. But when I saw the finished project- it all became very clear.
The production of the video ‘Alchemy’- heralding the launch of the Melbourne Metal Collective- was what was consuming my dear friend’s time and energy. Produced partly by the marvellous Mr Henson along with the unbeatable expertise of Candice Agius and Michael Matthews, the short film was breathtaking to behold. Recently featured in ACMI’s No Home series of fashion films, Alchemy showcases the work of Melbourne finest metallurgists.
Featuring the work of Henson, Estelle Deve, Hamish Munro, Polly van der Glas and Young Hunting, Melbourne Metal Collective aims to provide a backdrop of creativity and support where up- and-coming designers can thrive and learn together. With an impressive set list to follow via the collective’s website, MMC is soon to boast an online store, collection galleries, designer profiles and more in a one-stop arena for all things new and wonderful in Melbourne jewellery design.
