Michael Angel spreads his gossamer wings

Michael Angel’s eponymous label is as concerned with art as it is with fashion. Using images of his own creation, for the past give years Michael Angel has persisted in transforming his imagery into beautiful clothing. Working primarily with silk, Michael Angel envisions a strong, bold, powerful modern woman, and his striking, structural silhouettes and dynamic prints translate this vision to perfection. Clean lines, exaggerated shapes and colours that create both depth and a third dimension as they leap from garments give Michael Angel’s work a sleek futurism that embraces the vivacious personality and sexuality of the feminine persona.

A native Melbournian, Michael Angel rejects the classic black shades and slouchy silhouettes that Melbourne fashion generally adopts, and instead creates something directional and unique. With a resume that includes style direction at Melbourne Fashion Week and L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion festival, international styling experience as well as eight years as visual and creative supervisor at Saba, it’s no surprise that Michael Angel brings such intense talent and expertise to his own label.

Michael Angel’s current collection is a danger to plastic addicts like myself. Perusing the range online is dramatic- an adrenaline raising experience that leaves me as lusty as it does confused. I’m trying to decide between an oversized, digitally printed sheer t-shirt dress or a structural printed mini skirt to add to my wardrobe, but the more I look the harder it is to decide. Quietly sidling up to the Melbourne fashion scene, Michael Angel isn’t a big name, but if his current collection is anything to go by, it wont be long before the designer is one of our country’s most sought after design talents.
