Scandinavian style

Somewhere from Scandinavia

By Jessica Hopcraft, 30 June 2010

If you've ever encountered Scandinavians (here or abroad) then you must have noticed they have impeccable style. A put together yet enviably simple look that I have often had the problem of being too "bag lady" to perfect. So when I heard that a store was opening up that was going to specialise in Scandinavian designers I was very excited. Owner and Director Mattias Friberg and his wife Kristina Vikman opened the Somedays store in Sydney a few years ago and now our fair city has been lucky enough to have the Somewhere store open in October of last year. The concept seems to be finding a harmonious relationship between a neat bunch of Scandinavian and Australian labels that complement each other perfectly. There is a very consistent flow in the selection and everything is as affordable as it is desirable.

The store is located in the royal arcade on level 2 (the previous home of the don't come gallery above Marais) and it now boasts irresistible men's and women's clothing and accessories. They are also keeping the gallery aspect and recently they had the circle pit exhibition which went really well in the space. Somewhere is the place to head to for perfect basics and interesting spins on the classics. They house of course our favourite Swedish brands cheap Monday and Dr Denim but we are also treated to more items from the clothing range of each. In the case of Dr. Denim the entire range of denim and apparel. Other Scandinavian labels include Tiger of Sweden, Resterods, Velour, Whyred, Handsom and the newly added (and adorable) Danish brand Won Hundred. It also houses Sydney's Ode To No One which is a label that caught my eye with it's quality fabrics, impeccable finish and playfulness with shape. Other home grown brands include Secret Squirrel, The Horse Shoes, Pop issue and Skinny Nelson. They sell a selection of very cool accessories including a decent range of shoes. Sneaky Steve, Gram, everyones fav Brazilian candy smelling Melissa and a new very welcome addition of Sperry topsiders.

All in all this store has a great selection for both sexes with plenty of options for the typical monotone Melbournites and some crisp pastels for anyone trying to fight the dark winter cloud. It has a very strong idea of the kind of designers it wants to present and really manages to have a range that can satisfy all tastes. A welcome store for our town, it complements and enhances what we've already got going on.
