Alex Trimmer studied business but somehow ended up in the land of fashion. He’s not your standard fashionista though. He’s researched the land far and wide to find fabrics which are kind to the environment. You might not pick it to look at his collection of perfectly draped pieces, but there’s a serious sustainable sensibility happening.
Alex started Sosume in in late 2008 and the label’s first collection debuted for Spring/Summer 2009/10. He’s matter of fact about the values that guide the business. “It's pretty simple - keep it honest and make sure you are transparent in everything you do. Think heavily about sourcing and make sure you have a good reason for choosing the various components of each design. 2012 will see some great changes to the website where more information will be given on materials and manufacturing, allowing customers to understand all stages of the production process and the impact it has on the environment. It will allow them to make a more informed purchasing decision by considering all inputs.”
Sosume’s range includes some wear-anyplace tees and recently, Alex designed a special V-neck to raise money for The Black Dog Institute, a not-for-profit organisation which offers specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder. “Everyone knows of someone who experiences or who is affected by depression so I thought of this as a really good way to put some excess fabric to great use,” says Alex. “Some of my family have raised money for Black Dog in past through various fun runs such as Sydney's City to Surf.
“The tee is made from 100% micro modal, certified by Oeko-Tex 100 for the controlled use of non-harmful substances in the production process. I sourced this fabric from France and have used it for a number of seasons and love it- so soft to the touch with an amazing drape. The Black Dog's colours are black and orange and since all my excess fabric was black, choosing the colour was easy. I had to try and incorporate orange somehow and thought of having various stitchings in orange but opted for dying some white fabric orange so we had a nice solid, orange pocket. The cut of the tee came from one of my favourite staples, a classic V Neck- something that is versatile and easily wearable at any occasion.”
Alex aims to raise over $10,000 for the project and looks forward to seeing it put into action on a particular activity. “I love seeing direct cause and effect!” he says.
The tee is $50 plus postage and is available in sizes 6 through 14. 100% of the profits are donated to the Black Dog Institute. Available only via sosumeclothing.com
