Oh, Strummer, you have us craving summer. When the weather is warm and the ocean calls, fuss-free sophistication is the only viable way of dressing. Strummer’s SS11/12 collection, Halycon Days, gives us just this and is a very pretty showcase of how Edwina Hagon has developed as a designer.
Since the label’s beginnings in 2008, Strummer has been the go-to for feminine folk-feel dresses, gaining press from Nylon and Refinery 29 for its bohemian lean. In this most recent offering we see an extension of the label’s aesthetic, still awash with vintage nostalgia, but ever-so-slightly more mature with a new attention to tailoring. Favourite shapes are revisited, like the smock and crop top, in new fabrications such as super soft suede and lace.
Loosely inspired by 60’s songstress Vashti Bunyan, the palette swirls through earthy tones with additions of muted mustard, khaki and blues in powder, ash and navy. Masculine and feminine elements are balanced as pussy bow blouses sit alongside pleated trousers. There is also a small selection of footwear, bags and even a totally perfect, floppy farmer hat.
The deliciously sun-drenched campaign imagery could be a series of photographs of what we ideally imagine our lazy summer to look like this year. Halycon Days will drop nationwide at the end of this month.
