Style School: Saint Augustine Academy

By Ingrid Kesa, 20 September 2010

Inspired by the gods of old school rock, designer Alvin Manalo takes his talent for tailoring to the label, confirming it a cult classic among Sydney’s best-dressed.

Saint Augustine Academy’s namesake boutique in the ever-so-hip Surry Hills is a far cry from Alvin’s roots out west, where he picked up his skills from a suit maker. Known as a familiar face by local music aficionados (having dressed band Bridezilla as well as international MGMT), Alvin is one designer who truly connects with his clients. You’ll probably be surprised visiting the shop to find him manning the floor, which is a rarity for someone of his repute.

The label may have earned its reputation for modern menswear, but this season sees its first foray into a full line for ladies too. The Crystal Ballroom collection – borrowing its name from the notorious late 70s/early 80s Melbourne music venue - embodies Saint Augustine Academy’s affinity with mod, punk and goth subcultures. Denim is studded, t-shirts are cropped and attitude reaches fever point, with garments fit for the most fearless of front women.

Male fans won’t be disappointed, with the collection comprising the slim silhouettes that have become synonymous with the label, as well as contemporary interpretations on classics like the polo shirt.
