“Not interested in offering customers a better life. No requirement for catchy slogans. No need for by-lines.”
New Sydney-based eyewear brand Sunday Somewhere make classic eyewear with a modern twist. It’s eyewear that has no need for offering anything other than original designs and quality materials, but it’s easy to think of a few lines that they could have slotted in to their brand philosophy to describe their creations. They would probably include words that make you think of a hazy summer Sunday, like smoky barbeques, faded sunsets and fat doobies.
The new brand on the block is the creation of eyewear enthusiasts Dave Allison and Carlos Aviles, who have honed their design skills working for top Australian labels COLAB and AM respectively. Their debut collection We Light Up launched a couple of weeks ago, accompanied by a dreamy campaign video featuring an equally dreamy Rachel Rutt doing things like roaming around a sun-drenched landscape and sparking up that fat doobie.
What you do in your own pair of Sunday Somewhere sunnies, however, is up to you. Their beautifully crafted frames come with a make-up-your-own-mind attitude, and a classic yet modern aesthetic that makes them both fresh and timeless. Only the highest quality materials are used, whether it’s dark red tortoiseshell or mushroom acetate sourced from Italy, or the German-sourced QBE stop hinges. Acetate is combined with shiny metal finishes on the round-framed Matahari lenses (Matahari, naturally, means “sun” in Indonesian), and gives an almost futuristic quality to the otherwise retro Razzopello style.
If you too think that sunglasses should be an accessory rather than something to hide behind, ditch that pair you bought from the gas station along with a packet of Panadol and a bottle of Gatorade. Give Sundays the love they deserve, and look at every other day of the week through an equally optimistic, Italian-sourced lens.
Sunday Somewhere eyewear is stocked at Sydney’s most expertly curated boutiques, including By San Sebastian, Desordré, Deus Ex Machina and Mint. A complete list of stockists is available on their website, and prices start at $220.
