Good things are supposed to be worth waiting for, but why do so if you don’t have to? The duo behind the biannual and ceaselessly awesome Finders Keepers markets have just opened a permanent store on Cleveland Street, so if you’re starting to build up an irrepressible appetite for handcrafted trinkets and eco-friendly homewares, take heart — you no longer have to wait until December to sate it.
If you’ve ever been to a Finders Keepers market you’ll understand that this is excellent news. If you haven’t, imagine Chinatown’s Paddy’s Markets around 12pm Saturday if every plastic iPhone case was a handcrafted piece of quirky jewellery, every stuffed Hello Kitty was a hand-painted pouf cover, and instead of screaming babies and kebab stands they had live music and pop-up watering holes. All of these are reasons that Finders Keepers is best summed up as good vibes and cool wares, both of which prevail in Sarah and Brooke’s new store Follow.
There is a noticeable absence of live musicians and free-flowing booze in Follow, but there are original paintings by emerging local artists, environmentally friendly clothing, stacks of Frankie magazines and kooky stuffed animals. In fact there are around 40 independent designers cramming their colourful wares into the draws and cupboards of this heritage-listed building at any one time, with a continual rotation meaning that every time you stop by you’ll find something different — just like you would at Finders Keepers.
If you’re reading this from Melbourne and feeling kinda bummed that you have to wait until the next market date to max out your credit card in the name of supporting local talent, start saving your pennies — Follow’s next store will be launching online. If you’re in Sydney, pump up your bike tires, stock up on recyclable shopping bags and get down to 380 Cleveland Street. There are times when patience is an enviable virtue, but this does not need to be one of them.
