Kym Ellery is an Australian designer that, like a young Freddie Mercury, is shooting through the sky, somewhat like a cannonball. With rock’n’roll roots, Ellery has grown at an unparalleled rate from season to season, exponentially outdoing herself with every turn in the weather. Her AW11 offering, ‘Tenebaums in the Tulleries’, is no exception. With the signature Ellery style remaining, Kym takes her label to a place that is more complex, more enigmatic and more strikingly beautiful than ever before.
Ellery’s focus this season is on royalty- from the cult royalty of Wes Anderson’s Tenebaums to the majesty of Marie-Antoinette’s court. Modern with a subtle ancient twist, Ellery’s AW collection is an experiment in combining the quirky with the glamorous and the timeless. Dramatic yet wearable, Ellery’s sorbet pastels soften a palette splashed with bold, revolutionary red and muted metallic.
And the piece de resistance? If I had to chose a piece for my own wardrobe it would be the draped red dress. Add smoking Margot Tenebaum style eyes and a blonde crop to give a sexy dress a mysterious twist. I also love everything from the collection in lilac… In fact, you could call almost every piece in this collection seminal, being as it were, so perfectly thought out, so perfectly referencing our favourite parts of history and popular culture.
