How did you start designing?

I started the RMIT Fashion course and that's when I started designing seriously.

What inspired your ss10-11 collection?

SS10/11 was inspired by more sculptural forms and juxtaposing these defined shapes and slashes with soft fabrications to result in something unexpected and hopefully draping beautifully over the body.

Some of the folds in your work are sharp like origami, yet each piece still seems so softly feminine. How do you work to balance these two contradictory aesthetics?

It seems that each collection I am always working with contradictions; dichotomies both visually and conceptually. Working with extremes seems to somehow result in a balance of sorts for me! I began working with harsh shapes and complimenting these with fabrics that would soften them. Also, the colour palette; using a beige base and highlighting with flashes of soft pastel colours.

If your collection had a soundtrack, what would it be?

My soundtrack would be a collection of seemingly unassuming kind of pensive stuff next to something unexpectedly loud that doesn't seem like it would ever work but somehow does.

There is a widely held perception that colder climates produce genius fashion, with warmer climates left to 'beach style'. Do you think that directional fashion has a commercially viable place on the backdrop of the Australian climate that generally demands simple, practical clothing?

I think for 'directional' designers to be viable in Australia there has to be support for them-especially from retailers or we will lose designers overseas. The public are far more accepting and experimental than they are given credit for and willing to consider more unusual options.

What's next for Georgina Thomas?

Hopefully more people seeing what I do and being more creative every collection.

It's the zombie apocalypse, where do you hide and what is your weapon of choice?

Ohh this is good!... I'm torn between pretending to be a zombie to escape or cowering in a closet possibly prepared to use family and friends as human shields if need be!!!
