Time for Hunting

By Kat George, 14 September 2010

With summer collections dropping like flies into stores nationwide, it’s time to take what you saw on the runways back in May and put it in your wardrobe. Carly Hunter was the star of RAFW- wunderkind, one to watch, breakthrough designer- call her what you will, the girl can fashion. Possibly the best thing to come out of Melbourne since the tram, ‘Carly Hunter’ is the most coveted name for summer, so make sure it’s on your tag.

Carly Hunter is slowly building on the design aesthetic she entered the sartorial scene with- structuralism feminised by soft drapery. Folding and draping, Carly Hunter tells a story of modernity falling in love with a peach coloured princess and giving birth to a place where directional design meets girlish abandon. Unrestrained by trends, Carly Hunter creates her own world, playing with shape and texture to stretch the female silhouette into new shapes.

My favourite piece of the collection is the Hellmouth Dress, a masterpiece of ruffles and asymmetry on a nude palette. Slouchy shorts and draped dresses in tan and gun-mental are also essential for balmy city afternoons, while a range of polka-dotted bottoms, tops and dresses are perfect for chilled out, rooftop laden summer nights.
