One of my favourite phrases is ‘snuggle bum’, and every year when winter rolls around it’s a term I spout with frivolous abandon. Even more than I enjoy saying the words ‘snuggle bum’, I love being one; especially where it involves scarves, gloves, roaring fires and cuddles from the ones I love. Now, thanks to fashion, being a snuggle bum is about to get infinitely cuter. The coming winter is all about oversized knits- the kind that make you look like you’re a tiny little person in a giant’s hand me downs- and paired with a muted sorbet and ash palette, winter is about to get very adorable indeed.
My favourite pieces from the season come from Karla Spetic, who knows how to wrap a woman in layers of chunky knit. From her two toned cardigans to her striped jumpers, Karla Spetic creates oversized cocoons for winter chrysalides waiting (rather comfortably) to blossom into summer butterflies. Sara Phillips also does a dreamy, soft edged number for winter with her boyfriend style nude coloured cardigan, perfect for casually tossing over boyfriend jeans and boyfriend shirt for a laid back, girl next door aesthetic.
But the knit doesn’t stop there- some designers have done some seriously interesting things with wool for the winter season. Salasai have created an oversized sweater in a loose weave that slouches over the body and fades between colours at the torso. Envisage with black skinny jeans, chunky wedges and even chunkier scarf and you get modern knitwear at its best. Likewise, Claude Maus have given knit wear a modern edge, albeit more refined than their peers at Salasai, with a top heavy jumper that is perfect for layering with leather.
For something altogether different, Karina Pires
has created a snow leopard from her knits, printing woollen sweater dresses and cardigans with fancifully coloured animal print. So no matter what angle you look at it from, staying warm this winter is more stylish than ever.
