Can't take my eyes off you

Musings of a streetstyle snapper

By Business Chic, 08 August 2011

In an interview, the interweb-daddy of streetstyle photographers, The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman shared that his approach to streetstyle photography is to allow himself to fall in love a little bit every day.

As a streetstyle snapper, this approach is something I think about a lot when I'm out and about scouting out for personal style and trends to shoot for my growing portfolio. Sadly at this stage, I don't have the four-five hours a day that The Sartorialist does to be in the world searching for the style so here is an insight into my approach.

A typical dose of streetstyle snapping goes something like this: I'm cycling through the city on my way to meet friends when it'll dawn on me that the weather is fine and so too is the natural light which means I can start looking around-  ooh horse shit! Literally, there is an abundance of the stuff in varying stages of freshness along Swanston street so eyes need to be kept on the road to avoid the stuff and the tram tracks - phew!

And then, there he/she/they are. Standing in the street with the world going by around them. It's the shoes/ hat/ bag/ brooch/ shape/ COLOUR. It's like the Damien Rice song that is how many years old now but, I can't take my eyes off them. They are oblivious they are being watched, this is the point I get self-conscious and realise I'm staring; time to get working. I take a deep breath...  It's like trying to chat someone up in a bar. I flatter them, I want them to say yes.

So without further ado, here's a look at some of my recent finds. Was it love? I don't think so but they each had something that caught my eye in such a way that I needed to capture them if only for a moment; would you?
